Hawai`i County will receive $1.2 million in federal funding to buy new buses, the state’s congressional delegation has announced.
The funding is part of a $8.4 million appropriation statewide from the State of Good Repair Program administered by the US Department of Transportation.
A spokeswoman for the Big Island’s Mass Transit Agency said the money will be used to replace three 49-passenger coaches originally purchased in the 1980s and ‘90s.
The buses will be used for service island-wide, she said.

The county’s transit agency currently has a fleet of 51 buses.
