Puna Man Dies Surfing at Pohoiki Beach

A 42-year-old Keaau man died Thursday while surfing at Pohoiki Beach in Puna.

Police said today that Nathan Keliikuli fell and hit his jaw on his surfboard shortly after 10 a.m. Bystanders who found him unconscious and brought him to shore performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until fire department paramedics arrived at about 10:20 a.m.

Keliikuli was taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:13 a.m.

An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
