Weekend Plans For That Special Woman

Luckily for everyone, President Woodrow Wilson was a mama’s boy. In 1914, he adopted and signed Anna Jarvis’s Mother’s Day into law.

Since then, a day devoted to celebrating mothers has taken various forms of commercialism, materialism, and hedonistic gastronomic delight.

This Sunday May 13, the Big Island offers big love to mothers everywhere in the form of scrumptious brunches, live entertainment and more. When a handmade card and crayon drawing with a scrawled “I love you Mom” simply won’t do, here’s where to go and what to see this weekend.

Hula and Concert Fundraising Event

The 7^th Annual Mother’s Day Hula and Concert Celebration will take place on Saturday May 12, at the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel from 4:30 p.m. at the Lu’au grounds of the hotel. Na Hoku Hanohano winners Kekuhikanahele, Darren Benitez, Sean Na’auao, and Anelaikalani will perform through the night. Hula Halau Kala’akeakauikawekiu will raise funds for their keiki competitors aiming to participate in the Queen Lili’uokalani Keiki Hula Competition held on O’ahu.

Yo Mama! Mother’s Day Comedy Show

Uncle Mel Cabang and Augie T. will make the audience cry-laugh, for this special Mother’s Day slapstick comedy show. Jose Dynamite will open for Augie. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Event takes place Saturday May 12, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel. The hotel is located at 75-5660 Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.

HAPA in Concert

On Saturday May 12, take mom out for the night to set her weekend off right. The boys from HAPA will entertain at the Kilauea Military Theater in the Volcanoes National Park (see our previous article for more). Show begins at 7 p.m. tickets are $37 for general audience.

Red Roses and Brunch

Every mom will receive a red rose with her gorgeous brunch experience complete with live entertainment at the Kamuela Provision Company at the Hilton Waikoloa. On Sunday May 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., breads, breakfast items, deserts, salads, seafood bar, pasta, and carving station will be laid out amongst a scenic ocean view. Ah, Decadence at Mauna Kea

This special yearly brunch is sinful. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Sunday May 13, heave a sigh and make rounds of the room. Delectable goodies will overflow from steamed baskets, cold stations, hot stations, carving stations, dessert tables, and more. Just a tiny list of food found at this beautiful brunch are dim sum, malted waffles, sushi and tempura, pastries, cakes, ice cream and sundae bar, oysters, sashimi, prime rib, ham, pasta, lobster bisque, and omelets and bananas foster made to order. Mama Wants Some Raspberry Tiramisu

On Sunday May 13, enjoy the view and take in the flavors. As if the gorgeous Kona sunset and view from Huggo’s wasn’t enough, Chef Ken created a special $49.49 prix fixe menu just for those lovely ladies in everyone’s life. Reservations are going fast for this set menu of Keahole lobster or Kona coffee crusted tenderloin with Gorgonzola potato gratin, and raspberry tiramisu.
