A three run seventh inning spolied a classic pitchers duel between Waiakea High School’s Quintin Torres-Costa and Castle High School’s Eric Akamine, Torres-Costa’s stellar performance stood up, as his Warriors defeated Castle 5-0 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Torres-Costa put together another splendid performance for Waiakea, going the distance for a six-hit shutout. The University of Hawaii commit walked one while striking out eight Knights in the victory.
The offensive help for Torres-Costa started in the third inning. Korin Medeiros got one of his three hits in the game with his RBI double, scoring Kean Wong to give Waiakea a 1-0 lead. That lead held up all the way until the sixth inning, when Davy Camacho added to it with an RBI single.
In the seventh, Waiakea broke the game open with a three-run inning. Medeiros hit an RBI single to right field, which was misplayed, sending the ball all the way to the wall. A second run scored on the fielding error, and Medeiros later scored when his brother Kodi, drove him in with a single.
Waiakea will take on the winner of the Mid-Pacific / Pearl City contest at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio in Hilo and Kona.

Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Strong Start Leads to Semifinal Appearance
The Warriors of Kamehameha-Hawaii scored a run in each of the first four inning, then held on despite a Kalaheo High School comeback attempt, to defeat the Mustangs 8-3 in the opening quarterfinal of the Wally Yonamine Foundation / Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Tournament.

Kamehameha-Hawaii gave starter Kaimana Moike plenty of breathing room to work with early, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings, then adding a run in the third and fourth. Moike was stellar through the first five innings of his complete-game outing, despite allowing three runs in the last two innings. He struck out thirteen Kalaheo batters while only allowing six hits and a walk.
On the other hand, Kalaheo pitching was erratic throughout the contest. Kamehameha-Hawaii racked up only six hits, but scored their eight runs thanks in part to nine walks, three hit batters, and a defensive error. Christian Palmer took the loss for the Mustangs, as he couldn’t make it through three innings on the mound.
Bronson Pulgados went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Warriors to lead their offensive attack. Chay Toson scored three times and Keanu Dudoit-Isa scored twice.
Kamehameha-Hawaii will take on the tournament’s top seed, Waimea, Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Les Murakami Stadium in the first of two Division II semifinals. The Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions defeated Waialua 5-1 at Hans L’Orange Field.
