Kamehameha-Hawaii, Hawaii Prep in State Volleyball Semis

Tonight’s semi-final matches at the New City Nissan / Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Championships features a pair of Hawaii Island schools looking to make their first appearance in a championship game.

In Division I, Kamehameha-Hawaii dropped the first set against defending state champion Kamehameha-Kapalama 23-25, but fought back to defeat their sister school from Oahu by taking the second, third, and fourth sets by scores of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-20.

Evan Enriques led all players with 34 kills for Kamehameha-Hawaii to go along with three blocks, while Daniel Aina Jr. picked up 47 assists and four blocks.

The third-seeded Warriors will face Na Menehune of Moanalua, the tournament’s second seed, at McKinley High School’s Student Council Gymnasium Friday at 7:00 p.m., with the winner moving into the championship game on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hawaii Preparatory Academy traded sets with Waimea, but won the most important set, the fifth, in advancing to the Division II semifinals. Set scores were 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 17-25, and 15-8.

Jevin Ching led Ka Makani with 20 kills and a pair of aces, while Tyler Van Kirk tallied 18 kills and three blocks.

The fourth-seeded Ka Makani will face tournament top seed Hawaii Baptist Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Kaimuki High School. The Eagles rolled through Kahuku in straight sets to advance to the semifinals.
