Thursday’s Division I championship game is an unexpected, and slightly new, matchup.

After five years of dominance in the BIIF, the Waiakea Warriors were ousted from the semifinals by Hilo High, falling 2-0 Tuesday. That sets Hilo up with fellow East Hawaii foe Kea’au, who defeated Kealakehe 10-3 to advance to Thursday’s title game. The winner gets an automatic berth into the state softball tournament, while the loser will host Moanalua on Saturday for an at-large berth into the big dance.

Meanwhile, the Division II tournament kicks off today around the island, with six teams vying for three spots in the state softball tournament in Oahu.
