Kealakehe Among Finalist in ‘Ōlelo Video Competition

Two groups of elementary students at Kealakehe Intermediate School are among the finalists in the 16th annual ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Video Competition this year.

The students were selected from more than a 1,000 students across the state who submitted videos expressing stories through various formats within the categories of mini-documentary, PSA, short, expert and junior expert.

Twelve sponsored categories in the competition included: 808 No Vape; Clean Energy Future; Creating Peace; Eat Local, Eat Fresh; Forest Inspired; Pathways for a Better Life; Prepare NOW; School Breakfast Promotion; Speak Up for Justice; Storm Water Hero; The Value of Water; and Traffic Safety.

Kealakehe students were selected as finalists for their submissions of The Value of Water and 808 No Vape – Itʻs not Worth Losing Everything.

Students at the elementary, middle and high-school levels attending 88 public charter and private schools throughout the islands were selected as finalists in the competition.

The winning schools will be announced during an awards gala on Wednesday, April 24, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The gala will air live on this date starting at 9:30 a.m. on Channel 53; livestream can be viewed via Facebook and ‘ŌleloNet at olelo.org/53. The entire cablecast will also be made available for viewing within 48 hours on ‘Ōlelo Video On-Demand Channel 184 and on olelo.org/olelonet.

The ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange was created in an effort to help give local children a voice to tell stories through video about subjects they find meaningful. The finalists were selected based on subject impact and technical production. For more information, visit www.olelo.org/YXC.
