Hawai‘i Army National Guard From Hilo Deploying to Egypt

The Hawai‘i Department of Defense reports that about 90 Soldiers from Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry Regiment, Hawai‘i Army National Guard, participated in a deployment ceremony in Hilo on Friday, May 20, 2018, for an upcoming deployment to Sinai, Egypt.

It will be a year-long deployment for the 1-299th and they will be supporting the Multinational Forces Observers Group in Egypt.

This is the fourth time that the unit will be deployed: Vietnam in 1968, Iraq in 2004, Kuwait in 2008 and now Egypt in 2018.

There are some first time deployers and multi-deployers in the Hilo unit. The 1-299th Soldiers will be training in Fort Bliss, Texas for about a month before heading to Egypt.
