Friday, July 6 at 6:10 p.m.: No Tsunami From Explosive Event
Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory reports a collapse/explosive event with energy equal to a 5.4 magnitude earthquake has occurred at Halema‘uma‘u Crater at 6:05 p.m.
The WorldView-3 satellite acquired this view of Kīlauea’s summit on July 3. Despite a few clouds, the area of heaviest fractures in the caldera is clear. Views into the expanding Halema‘uma‘u crater reveal a pit floored by rubble. HVO, on the northwest caldera rim, is labeled. PC: USGS
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports there is no Tsunami Threat to the island of Hawai‘i.

Due to the volcanic activity, the following is provided for your awareness:
Residents in the area affected by earthquakes are advised to monitor utility connections of gas, electricity, and water after earthquakes.
When driving be on the lookout for cracks in roadways.
If ash is observed stay indoors or seek cover.
Again, there is no Tsunami Threat to the island of Hawai‘i.

Friday, July 6 at 4 p.m.: Sink Hole Keeps One Lane of Highway 11 Closed

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that Fissure 8 continues to be very active and is feeding a lava channel to the ocean at Kapoho. The flow is producing a broad ocean entry along the shoreline, and continues to expand into Kapoho Beach Lots and the Four Corners intersection.
The following policies remain in effect:
Four Corners and Kapoho Beach Lots are closed to any access.
Be aware that spill overs of the channel and other breakouts are possible on the active flow field, do not access the active flow field due to extreme hazard.
The National Weather Service report potential thunderstorms this evening and tomorrow for lower Puna. Due to the potential thunderstorms, the following advisories are issued:
Be aware of lightning; the best place to be is indoors.
Expect possible interruptions in your utility services.

Be on the alert for malfunctioning traffic signals. Treat flashing traffic lights as a four-way stop.
The Hawai‘i Police Department reports one lane of Highway 11 remains closed at the 30 mile marker near Volcano Golf Course subdivision due to a large sink hole. An assessment will be performed to determine the status of the road.
Disaster assistance is available islandwide to individuals and businesses in Hawai‘i County that have been affected by the Kīlauea eruption.
Starting Saturday, July 7, the Disaster Recovery Center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. The center is located at the Kea‘au High School Gym. If you need a ride, buses run between the two shelters and the Disaster Recovery Center.

The Hawai‘i Police Department reported that Highway 11 is restricted to one lane in the vicinity of the 30 mile marker near Volcano Country Club due to damage to the roadway. Motorists in the affected area are advised to drive with caution as state highways and National Park personnel are on the scene. Avoid the area if possible, as alternate routes are not available at this time.
