Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Hilo Community Police responded to two burglaries, one vehicle theft and two vehicle break-ins over the seven-day period from Friday through Thursday, May 18 to 24, 2018.
The stolen vehicle was recovered at the time this report was published.

2 BURGLARIES
May 20 between 4 and 6:45 a.m., unknown suspect(s) broke into a residence on Ala Muku Street and removed several items. Stolen were a backpack with credit cards, a peach-colored bicycle and an Asus brand laptop. Entry to the residence appears to have been made on the second floor of the two- story residence, by popping off a screen and gaining entry to the second floor.
May 22 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) entered a residence located near the 100 block of Barenaba Lane by damaging the glass to the rear door to gain entry. Suspect(s) removed jewelry, checks, fishing equipment and a pillow case.

1 VEHICLE THEFT

May 23, Chanell Evangelista-Kaleiwahea, 42, was arrested for Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle. The 59-year-old victim reported that she gave Evangelista-Kaleiwahea a ride in her 2010 Ford Focus. The victim stated that she and Evangelista-Kaleiwahea arrive at a store in Hilo at 4:45 p.m. The victim said that Evangelista-Kaleiwahea grabbed her vehicle keys out of the ignition and held onto it as both individuals walked into the store. At about 5 p.m., the victim lost sight of Evangelista-Kaleiwahea and ran out the store to see her vehicle leaving west on Maka‘ala Street. The victim’s vehicle was recovered on May 23 at 7 p.m. on Kekuanaoa Street. Surveillance from a business on Kekuanaoa Street confirms Evangelista-Kaleiwahea operating the victims vehicle, parks the vehicle and exits. The victim made positive ID of Evangelista-Kaleiwahea through photographic lineup. On May 24 at 5 p.m.,
Evangelista-Kaleiwahea was charged with UCPV. Her bail was set at $2,000.

2 VEHICLE BREAK-INS
May 19, a 57-year-old man reported that Danny Rios Sr., 55, nicknamed “Poncho,” entered
his gray 1989 Nissan pickup truck (Hawai‘i license plate HRF671) without permission
through the unlocked driver’s-side door while it was parked near the 900 block of Kīlauea Avenue. Removed were approximately $10 in loose change from the ashtray,
Arnette sunglasses, one pack USA menthol cigarettes and a Hawaiian mix audio CD.
Rios Sr. was caught on video surveillance entering the victim’s truck. An officer contacted
Rios Sr. and identified the stolen property in his possession. Rios Sr. was arrested
and charged for UEMV 1. His bail was set at $10,000.
May 19, a 21-year-old woman, reported that unknown suspect(s) entered into her 2003 Toyota Corolla (license plate HMX487) by forcible prying the front passenger door while it was parked near the 400 block of Hualani Street. The victim stated that she noticed her vehicle had a damaged door, where entry was made. The victim stated that removed from her vehicle was the paperwork for the vehicle registration, safety check, insurance card and $10 in miscellaneous US currency. Also removed from the vehicle were a Penn fishing reel, lantern, bag and hats. When an officer contacted Danny Rios Sr., 55, he was found to be in possession of the Penn fishing reel and lantern. Rios Sr. was arrested and charged with UEMV and Theft 3. His bail was set at $10,000 for the UEMV and $1,000 for the Theft 3.
This information was provided by the authorities. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
