The Senate Judiciary committee will hear House Bill 2442 HD2 SD1, legislations that would address the state’s abandoned vehicle issue, at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018, in conference room 016.
Introduced by Rep. Cedric Gates (Waiʻanae, Mākaha, Mākua, Māʻili), the bill requires Hawai‘i counties to remove any abandoned vehicle on a public road within 10 business days of being reported. The bill also contains amendments to help the City & County of Honolulu streamline its process by freeing up much-needed space in its storage lots.
“Abandoned vehicles are a blight not only because they litter our beautiful ‘aina, but more significantly they pose a real safety and environmental hazard to our community,” said Rep. Gates. “The city and counties have taken steps to address this issue, but due to limited resources and space, many cars remain on public roads and parks, endangering our neighborhoods.”
