Merrie Monarch Festival organizers in Hilo have announced the judges for this year’s competition, which will take place from April 1 through 7, 2018.

The week-long festival features an internationally acclaimed hula competition, an invitational Hawaiian arts fair, hula shows and a grand parade through Hilo town.

Judges for the 55th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival are Cy Bridges, Maelia Loebenstein-Carter, Ainsley Halemanu, Nalani Kanakaʻole, Mae Kamamalu Klein, Piʻilani Lua and Kalena Silva.

The judges will assess 29 groups—20 wahine and nine kane—who will compete at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium this year.

The hālau are from Hawai‘i Island, O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, California and Washington.
