Kahilu Theatre will present world-renowned pianist Cyrus Chestnut and his jazz trio on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. Described as the best jazz pianist of his generation, Chestnut and his trio, including drummer Neal Smith and bassist Dezron Douglas, will perform both original tunes and cover music during the concert.

Chestnut was immersed in music from an early age, and built a reputation for himself as a skilled, versatile musician with an ability to blend and bend various genres, melding gospel into the jazz club scene. The trio plays at jazz festivals around the world, as well as clubs and concert halls.

“This country and this art form are founded on the basic principles of freedom, whereby a person is able to think, say, or play what he or she chooses,” said Chestnut. “Throughout the years as I look at history, all of my predecessors, regardless of what the environment was, shared freely their thoughts and feelings in a swinging, musical way on the bandstand. They swung hard and made the listeners feel better leaving than when they arrived. This is the tradition I intend to preserve.”
