Kona Historical Society (KHS) has announced two additional days for its Portuguese bread making program in the month of December. The public is invited to watch KHS staff and volunteers roll and bake fresh loaves of cinnamon bread and other varieties from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and Tuesday, Dec. 9.

For those who can’t make it, the regularly scheduled bread bake program takes place every Thursday at the forno and the public is invited to participate. Volunteers and staff team up to bake close to 100 loaves of white, wheat and sweet bread. Attendees learn how to make traditional Portuguese bread by hand. The technique arrived in Hawai‘i in the 1880s with Portuguese immigrants who worked on sugar plantations and are credited with developing the local dairy industry.

Bread loaves can be purchased for $8 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sales are on a first come, first served basis until 4 p.m., or until sold out. All proceeds support KHS, a community nonprofit focused on preserving and sharing the history of the Kona districts.
