Pahala Accident Results in Fatality

A fatal crash in Pahala on Hawai‘i Island this morning, Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, claimed the life of one person and injured another.

The crash on Highway 11 in the 47 Mile Marker area was reported at 3:36 a.m.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 3:40 a.m. to find a large delivery truck laying on its side, and a small compact vehicle that was heavily damaged, fully engulfed in flames and blocking Highway 11.

The driver of the truck self-extricated.

Upon suppression of the fire, Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel found a single victim in the driver’s seat of the car.

Firefighters searched the area around roadway searching for more possible victims in case a passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

Highway 11 at the 47 Mile Marker between Pahala and Volcano in Kau was closed for several hours while the scene was being investigated.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Hawaiʻi Police Department.
