Despite the University of Hawai‘i Hilo Vulcans having the low round of the day, it wasn’t enough to win the title on the last day of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament hosted on Saturday morning at the Waikoloa Beach Course.
The Vulcans climbed from fourth place to second with a final day, third round score of 277, four shots better than anyone else. It left them just one shot shy of Wilmington, who finished with a +15 three-round score of 855 (284-289-282).
The Vulcans’ final tally was 291-288-277 (856), +16. Dixie State, who won their own tournament earlier in the week, was third at +19. Second round leader Saint Martin’s dropped back to fourth place (+26) of the eight teams.
It was a strong way to end the fall portion of the schedule for the Vulcans, who won’t play again until the host the Amer Ari Invitational, Feb., 1 to 3, 2018.

“It was the first time this fall that I felt like we are close to playing to our potential,” said UHH head coach Earl Tamiya. “This team has the potential to be pretty good and we will continue working towards that.”
Jared Kinoshita was UH Hilo’s top individual finisher in fourth place. The junior shot a one-under 69 today and finished at 213 (+3). Ryan Roodzant charged up the leader board all the way to fifth place (tie) by carding a sizzling 66, tying for the low round of the day. Roodzant finished at +4 for the tournament (74-74-66). Next on the Vulcan scorecard was Evan Merrier (75-69-73) at +7 and Taylor Patrick was the fourth UHH scorer at +8 (69-77-72).
Dixie State’s Jayce Frampton won medalist honors at two-under par (70-70-68), Wilmington’s Ryan Rucinski was second (68-74-68) at even par and Saint Martin’s Trevor Frisby, the second round leader was third (71-65-76) at +2.
