The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for east-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m., Oct. 16, 2017. There is also a high surf advisory for south facing shores of all islands until 6 p.m., Oct. 16.

Strong trade winds around and upwind of the islands will produce rough and choppy seas and elevated surf along east facing shores for the next several days. Additionally, an elevated swell from the South will maintain advisory level surf for the south facing shores today.

Surf along south facing shores is expected to be between 6 to 8 ft.

The impacts of the advisory are moderate and ocean users can expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beach goers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
