Kona Stories Book Shop will host its free monthly Words and Wine meet-and-greet event with local authors, complementary pūpū and wine, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, starting at 6 p.m. This monthʻs featured authors are Dave Fouts, Sheila Gallien and Sonia Martinez.
Fouts, a Midwest native and retired Hawai‘i public school counselor, will talk about his new book “Was This It?,” a compilation of prose and poetry themed around science fiction, fantasy and literary fiction. He explores topics dealing with loneliness, loss, experiences in isolated villages with failing missionaries, army life in Korea and time spent on the Moon.

Gallien is a single mom and surfer who has worked in various roles in business, entertainment, hospitality and sales. In January 2017, she discovered an ability to “channel” a higher consciousness in the depths of a six-week illness. She will share her new book, “Bridging Ascension,” a guidebook exploring the evolution of consciousness on Earth.

Originally from Cuba, Martinez has lived in Hawai‘i for the last 23 years and has been writing about food and cooking since 1999. Upon first moving to Hawai‘i in 1994, she and her son opened and operated Akaka Falls Inn, a bed and breakfast, cooking school and gourmet gift shop in Honomu. She has been a freelance food writer and columnist for several newspapers and magazines since coming to the Islands. She will share her third book, “Sonia Tastes Hawai‘i,” which recounts five yearsʻ worth of columns for Ke Ola Magazine, Ke Ola Weddings and Special Events Magazine. The book also includes articles and recipes inspired by Sonia’s visits to local farmerʻs markets and CSA farmers on Hawai‘i Island.

The Oct. 3 Words and Wine event will begin with an informal meet-and-greet and merge into more formal author presentations. The event will conclude at 8 p.m. following Q&A. Attendees are encouraged to wear casual aloha wear.
