Flood Advisory Issued for Portions of Big Island

A flood advisory issued for Hawai‘i County will be in effect until 7:15 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2017.

At 4:09 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain near Waikoloa Village, or near Pu‘uanahulu.

Rain was falling at a rate of around an inch an hour.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa Village, Pu‘uanahulu, Kamuela, Kalaoa, Puako, Pōhakuloa Training Area, Kawaihae, Pōhakuloa Camp, Kohala Ranch, Waikoloa Beach and Waiki‘i.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot.

Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 7:15 p.m. if heavy rain persists.
