The open enrollment period to apply for 2018 Marketplace health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) begins Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 15, 2017. This is the only opportunity to enroll or renew Marketplace insurance for 2018, unless someone experiences a life qualifying event such as a loss of health insurance, change in household, new marriage, newborn baby or a loss of income.

Those who already have Marketplace health insurance are advised to review their account information and affirmatively select a plan. The State of Hawai‘i helps income-qualified individuals and families pay premiums through the Premium Assistance Program. To qualify, residents must apply for MedQUEST insurance through the state and receive a denial notice. Residents may then apply for Marketplace insurance online at Healthcare.gov.

Under the ACA, individuals without qualifying health coverage will be fined $695 per adult and $347.50 per child.
