Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has released the names and photos of four nominees from Hawaiʻi Island to enter classes at U.S. Military Service Academies in Summer 2017.
Islandwide, Gabbard has announced 22 students she nominated for service academies from across her district.
After a long application and interview process, the nominees will now be considered for final selection by the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy and the United States Air Force Academy.

“Across Hawaiʻi, high school seniors will soon begin gearing up for graduation, summer plans, and either beginning college, serving in our military, or entering the workforce,” said Gabbard. “A select few will be enrolling in one of the U.S. Military Service Academies, and I’ve had the privilege and great responsibility of nominating twenty-two phenomenal applicants to represent our Aloha State in service to our country. I wish each of these nominees the very best in the final weeks of the selection process and in their promising futures.”
The nominees from Hawaiʻi Island nominated by Gabbard are:
Mr. Lawrence Barrett, Konawaena High School – Air Force Academy, Military Academy
Mr. Ragan Leslie, Konawaena High School – Naval Academy
Ms. Anh-Thu Pham, Lake Braddock (Virginia) – Naval Academy
Ms. Jennifer Serrano-Gervais, Hilo High School – Military Academy, Naval Academy
The nomination application opens each year on May 15 to candidates who are high school juniors, or who have already graduated. Students who attend a Military Service Academy must commit to a minimum of five years of military service following graduation. Find out more about the nominations process.
