Strong Thunderstorm Headed Toward Hilo

The National Weather Service warns Hilo area residents that a strong thunderstorm will affect parts of Hawai‘i County.

At 1:36 p.m. HST, a strong thunderstorm was located over Ninole, 16 miles northwest of Hilo, moving southeast at 5 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include Honomu, Laupahoehoe, Ninole and Hakalau.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.

Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.
