UPDATE 3: Flood Advisory Issued for Big Island
Crystal Richard video: Hawai‘i Police Department reports the Hilo-bound lane on Highway 19 is closed at Pukihae Street (north of Singing Bridge) due to a landslide. Area motorists can use Wainaku Street as an alternate route.
UPDATE 3: Jan. 24, 6:44 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i County until 945 p.m.
At 640 p.m., radar indicated waves of moderate to heavy rain moving into windward portions of the Big Island, impacting the area from near Upolu Point through Hamakua to Hilo through the Puna district.
Rainfall rates near two inches per hour are occurring in the heavier showers, leading to significant runoff on area roadways, especially in the Hilo area.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to:
- Hilo
- Hawaiian Paradise Park
- Honokaa‘
- Honomu
- Kea‘au
- Kukuihaele
- Waimanu Valley
- Waipio Valley
- Pahoa, Pepeekeo
- Halaula
- Glenwood
Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i County until 6:45 p.m.
At 3:45 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain near Hilo. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

- Hilo
- Hawaiian Paradise Park
- Pahoa
- Glenwood,
- Glenwood
- Mountain View

At 8:16 a.m., radar indicated persistent rain falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour in and around Hilo and over the Puna District, with isolated rain rates up to 3 inches per hour.
Civil Defense reported heavy ponding on some roads in Hilo, including Kukila Street and Pauahi Street.
