Mitsubishi Electric Championship Set for Scenic Hualalai

The PGA TOUR Champions season kicks off this week at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, where a field of legendary figures in the game of golf is set to competethe week of Jan. 16 to 21.

The 48-player field will once again play at the scenic Hualalai Golf Club, where the Mitsubishi Electric Championship has been staged since 1997.

The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai includes tournament champions from the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of PGA TOUR Champions majors since 2012 and 10 additional invitees based on career PGA TOUR wins and major championship titles.

When World Golf Hall of Fame member Jack Nicklaus designed Hualalai he put an emphasis on using the natural terrain and lava.

“The inspiration came from the lava… to use those natural ups and downs, always keeping in mind that the ocean is the greatest influence here,” said Nicklaus.

To meet the challenge this spectacular terrain presented, Nicklaus was at Hualalai every step of the way—routing, designing and refining each hole.

His investment of energy, creativity and attention to detail produced a truly spectacular playing field. The 12th hole, a par-3, provides an adrenaline rush for any challenger facing this expansive contoured green with a deep bunker right in the middle.

Hualalai’s signature 17th hole is where Nicklaus takes the golfers to the sea with a green that “actually touches the ocean”.

For the week, the course will play to 7,053 yards and at a par of 72. The par-4 11th will test every player in the field, as it played as the toughest on the course in 2016. For the week, the scoring average on the hole was 4.233 and it was the 58th most difficult hole on PGA TOUR Champions last season.
