Highway 11 was closed in both directions just north of the 96-mile marker from at about 9:30 p.m. due to a head-on collision on Friday, Jan. 6, involving three people.
The collision caused severe front-end damage to both vehicles, and leakage of gas and oil on the roadway.
A 66-year-old male was pinned in the driver’s seat of the mid-size truck. The 63-year-old female passenger was foundlaying on the road when emergency responders arrived.
They were transported to Kona Hospital by Medic 12 and Medic 6.
A 34-year-old female was pinned in the driver’s side of the small, compact car she was operating.
She died at the scene of the accident.
The road reopened at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The incident has been turned over to the Hawai‘i Police Department for investigation.
