Twenty-three motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Feb. 29 and March 6. Three of the 23 arrested were involved in traffic crashes, while one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 204 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 18.6 percent increase from last year’s count of 172 arrests during the same time period.
Broken down by district, five arrests took place in the South Hilo district. Seven occurred in the Puna district, while nine were listed in the Kona district. Two were also reported in the South Kohala district.
Major accidents have decreased by 10.3 percent, compared to last year. During the first nine weeks of 2016, 236 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 263 during the same time period in 2015.

Three fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Those crashes resulted in four fatalities. Three fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year, with a total of five traffic fatalities. The numbers represent a decrease of 20 percent in fatalities.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
