Twenty-five motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Jan. 11 and Jan. 17. Three of the 25 arrested were involved in traffic crashes. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 54 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 12.5 percent increase from last year’s count of 48 arrests during the same time period.
Broken down by district, two of the arrests this week occurred in the North Hilo district. Six occurred in the South Hilo district, seven were reported in the Puna district, one in the Ka’u district, six in the Kona district, and another three in the South Kohala district.
Major accidents have increased by 19 percent, compared to last year. During the first 17 days of 2016, 25 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 21 during the same time period in 2015.

No traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways. No traffic fatalities had occurred at this point last year either.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
