Hilo Fuel Prices Near $2.50 to Start 2016

PIXABAY FuelFuel prices in Hilo are near the $2.50 mark while costs are just up from $2.75 in Kona, holding onto steady averages over the past two weeks.

Overall drops were witnessed throughout the month of December island wide.

Using numbers from AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report, along with Gas Buddy Data, Big Island Now continues to track fuel prices on the Big Island.

In Hilo, regular fuel was an average of $2.53 Monday, a drop of four cents compared to last week’s numbers. Mid-grade fuel dropped in average by two cents to $2.63 and the premium fuel average was $2.75 Monday, dropping by two cents.

One month ago, regular fuel in Hilo was averaging five cents more than its current price at $2.68. Mid-grade and premium fuels were both eight cents more just one month ago, sitting at $2.75 and $2.87, respectively.

Average fuel prices compared to the same week in January 2015 are lower in average by just under a dollar across the board. At this point last year, regular fuel in Hilo cost $0.92 more at an average of $3.45. Mid-grade fuel cost an average of $0.91 more at $3.54. Premium gas cost $0.95 more on average last year at $3.66. The fuel average drops on a per year basis have fallen slightly in recent weeks, however, lower numbers have remain prevalent overall.

Fuel in Kona saw some slight motion this week, holding mostly steady averages over the past two weeks.

Big Island Now’s calculation of Gas Buddy data from Kailua-Kona shows that regular fuel was an average of $2.82 on Monday, the same average as two weeks ago and an overall drop of seven cents over the past month. Mid-grade gasoline was an average of $2.93, a one-cent increase compared to two weeks ago and an overall six-cent decrease compared to one month ago. Premium fuel also saw a drop in average at $3.00, one cent less than two weeks ago and a drop of eight cents over the past month.

In Honolulu, the average price of regular fuel was reportedly one cent less than the average in Hilo, according to AAA data. However, Honolulu’s fuel average was 30 cents less than Kona’s average. Honolulu fuel purchasers are paying an average of $2.52 on Monday.

Diesel buyers in Hilo were paying an average of $4.14 on Monday, holding onto its average from last week. Honolulu diesel buyers were paying an average of $4.26, dropping by one penny over the past week.

The national average for regular fuel on Monday was $1.99, holding onto its average from last week. The national average is 54 cents less than Hilo’s average this week and 83 cents less than Kailua-Kona’s prices.

Club member-only prices, such as Costco and HFN, are excluded from this analysis and its averages.
