Nineteen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11. Seven of the 19 arrested were involved in traffic crashes while three were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 822 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2015. That number is a 9.4 percent decrease from last year’s number of 907 arrests during the same time period.
Major accidents remain down by 4.2 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 1,178 major accidents have taken place, compared to 1,230 at the same point in 2014.
Traffic fatalities have jumped up by 60 percent compared to one year ago. Sixteen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways. At this time in 2014, 10 traffic fatalities had occurred.

Of the nine 16 fatalities, HPD reports that five were related to drugs and four were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.
HPD will continue DUI roadblocks and patrols across the island.
