Big Island Fuel Prices Continue Cent-by-Cent Drop

Big Island fuel prices have continued to drop gradually compared to last week. A slight downward trend was observed in fuel prices across the board in both Hilo and Kona, despite higher diesel prices. Big Island Now’s analysis of AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report and Gas Buddy data shows a drop in cents at the pump.

On Tuesday, the average cost of regular fuel in Hilo was three cents lower than one week ago. At $3.22, the fuel price for regular gasoline also dropped one cent in the past 24 hours. Mid-grade fuel dropped by an nickel to $3.30 on average over the past week, and dropped a cent since Monday’s average.  Hilo’s average for premium fuel on Wednesday was $3.42, four cents lower than prices oneweek ago, but the same average that was reported 24 hours prior.

Based on Big Island Now’s analysis of AAA’s report, fuel prices in Hilo continue to inch down cent-by-cent over the past month for all grades. The average for regular fuel has dropped by six cents in the past month while mid-grade fuel has seen a seven-cent decrease in average. Premium fuel is also six cents cheaper in average compared to one-month ago.

The average prices of fuel in Hilo are significantly lower than what they were one year ago. According to AAA’s report numbers, the average gas price for regular fuel was $4.15, while mid-grade was an average of $4.17 and premium fuel cost $4.38.

According to Big Island Now’s average calculations of Wednesday Gas Buddy data for Kailua-Kona, regular fuel averaged about $3.47, a three-cent decrease compared to last week’s average of $3.50. Mid-grade fuel was averaging $3.60 on Wednesday, two cents cheaper than the average a week ago. Premium fuel also saw a one-cent drop in average at $3.69.

In Honolulu, the average price of regular fuel is 21 cents less than in Hilo and 46 cents lower than Kona’s average regular fuel prices. Residents on Oahu are paying an average of $3.01 for regular fuel, a decrease of four cents from last week.

Diesel prices in Hilo are an average of $4.30 this week, an increase of four cents since last week, while Honolulu diesel buyers are paying an average of $4.49, one penny higher than last week.
