The Hawai’I Police Department is asking residents to be aware of an auto insurance scam.
HPD said Wednesday that it heard from a 66-year-old Hilo man, who reported a suspicious phone call to authorities. The person who called him claimed to work for an auto insurance company and offered a third-party extended warranty for the man’s vehicle. The caller was gave the man’s vehicle identification number during the conversation.
The Hilo resident’s car dealership told authorities that these calls are common, Similar fraudulent offers have also been made through the mail.
Police are advising the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited offers through phone, mail, electronic mail, or text messages. Anyone who feels they have been contacted in a suspicious manner should check with the State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs or the Better Business Bureau.
