VAC Jazz Ensemble Ends Spring Season

Volcano Art Center’s Spring Jazz Series final performance is scheduled for May 16.

Saturday’s performance will feature Slyde Hyde, a legendary trombonist, and special guest vocalist Yolee Hyde.

The pair will join the VAC Jazz Ensemble, led by musical director Jr. Volcano Choy on trumpet, keyboard and vocals, Reggie Griffin on guitar, Brian McCree on bass, and Bruce David on drums.

Slyde made his debut with the Stan Kenton Orchestra after learning to play trombone in the fourth grade. Since beginning his career, he has played and recorded with Count Bassie and his Orchestra, Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra, Herbie Hancock, Donna Summer, Carol King, Steely Dan, Tom Scott, The Temptations, and many others.

In addition, Slyde has received four National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences MVP awards and has been inducted into the Rock & Roll/Jazz Hall of Fame.

Two Saturday performances are scheduled. A matinee show will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. evening performance.

Tickets for the 4:30 p.m. show are $15 for VAC members and $18 for non-members. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $18 for VAC members and $20 for non-members.
