UH-Hilo Jazz Orchestra Prepares to ‘Funk It Up’
“Funk It Up” will be presented at University of Hawai’i at Hilo Performing Arts Center by the UH-Hilo Jazz Orchestra on Thursday, May 7.
The one-show only performance will begin at 7 p.m. and focus its attention on the funk genre, popularized by artists like George Clinton, Sly Stone, and Tower of Power. Included in the performance will be special guest vocalists and dancers performing Dori Yamada’s original choreography.
“Funk music is basically soul music, but with an emphasis on rhythm,” said Orchestra Director Trever Veilleux. “It is dance music that makes you feel good and makes you want to move. The musicians, singers and dancers have done an amazing job putting this show together and I can’t wait for people to see it!”
In December, the 25-piece jazz ensemble’s concert, a tribute to Frank Zappa, sold out.
Tickets for May’s show are on sale now at the Box Office, open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., by calling 932-7490 or ordering online. Prices for tickets are: $7 general, $5 discount, students with a valid ID, and children under the age of 17.
