Fifteen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between March 30 and April 5. Of the 15 drivers, four were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 249 DUI arrests have occurred on the Big Island so far in 2015. This number is down 27.8 percent from 2014, where during the same time period, 345 DUI arrests were made.
Major accidents also continue to remain down from last year by 18.3 percent. A total of 362 major accidents have been reported on Big Island roadways so far this year, compared to 443 last year.
Traffic fatalities, however, are up by 50 percent. Six traffic fatalities have happened on Big Island roadways so far in 2015. Four occurred during the same time period in 2014. Four of the fatalities this year have been related to drugs.
