Twenty-one motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Feb. 16 and Feb. 22. Of the 21 arrests, seven drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly statistical report.
The DUI arrests continue to remain down by 26.5 percent in 2015. So far, 139 DUI arrests have been made, compared to 189 at the same time in 2014.
This year, 187 major accidents have occurred, a decrease by 23.7 percent from last year, when 245 major accidents had been reported during the same time period.
Four traffic fatalities have happened on Big Island roadways, a statistic that has increased by 33.3 percent since 2014, where during the same time, only three had occurred. One of the fatalities was related to drugs.
