UH-Hilo Offers Free Conflict Management Workshop

The University of Hawai’i at Hilo will offer a free conflict management workshop to the community, featuring internationally renowned mediator, speaker, and author of numerous books on mediation and conflict resolution, Dr. Kenneth Cloke.

A workshop open to the general public will be held on Friday, Feb. 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., while a second workshop held on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. is reserved for UH-Hilo and Hawai’i Community College students.

Attendees of the workshop will become aware of cross-cultural differences, be equipped with the tools that are useful to identify sources of conflict, ease tension, and resolve conflict, as well as gain skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and mediation.

Visiting instructor Dr. Cloke is the Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution. He has carried out mediation in 20 major countries and taught mediation and conflict studies at a number of universities.

Friday evening’s workshop will include: The Neurophysiology of Conflict: Bringing Oxytocin into the Room and Transformational Techniques: From Settlement to Resolution, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation.

Saturday’s day-long workshop for UH-Hilo and HawCC students will include: The Neurophysiology of Conflict: Bringing Oxytocin into the Room, Resolving Conflicts at Work: 10 Strategies for Resolution, How to Design, Organize and Conduct “Dangerous and Difficult Dialogues”, and Using Conflict Resolution Techniques to Reduce Stereotyping, Bias, and Prejudice.

Light refreshments will be provided, and participants can bring their own meals.

The two workshops are sponsored by the Chancellor’s Professional Development Fund and is in collaboration with the County of Hawai’i Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Ku’ikahi Mediation Center, University of Hawai’i-Manoa, and West Hawai’i Mediation Center.
