Award-winning novelist and writing teacher Tom Peek will be conducting his “Writing Family History and Personal Memoir” workshop on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Peek will take writers on a journey into the past that ensures that their true life tale is preserved for the future. Simple techniques will be taught to help overcome barriers that cause writer’s block, self-censorship, and a lack of depth in writing. Peak will guide participants through fun and provocative exercises used to propel an individual’s own personal memoir, family, or community history using personal photographs and nostalgic objects to evoke memories.

Since 1991, Peek has taught workshops throughout the state, including at the VAC and UH Hilo, as well as on Maui and Lana’i.

In 2013, Peek’s Hawai’i novel, Daughters of Fire, won a Benjamin Franklin Silver Finalist Award for Popular Fiction from the Independent Book Publishers Association. In addition to his award-winning novel, Peek’s work includes newspaper stories and commentaries, university publications, magazine articles, national park exhibits, and video productions.
