Snow closed the road to the summit of Mauna Kea today, and adverse weather conditions were likely to shut down all day.
The National Weather Service issued a winter-storm warning for both Big Island summits until 6 p.m.
A bulletin issued by Mauna Kea rangers at noon said that snow plows made clearing passes this morning but winds gusting to more than 60 mph continued to blow snow back onto the roadway.
The road was expected to remain closed for the remainder of the day at the visitor information station located at the 9,200-foot level.
The weather service also issued a high-wind warning for the summits of both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa where localized gusts exceeding 85 mph were occurring.
According to the Mauna Kea Weather Center, the temperature at the summit at 1 p.m. was 28 degrees, with a wind chill factor of about 7 degrees above zero.
