Hawaii’s governor today released $6 million for improvements and other modifications at Hilo Harbor’s Pier 1.

The funding will pay for construction of a new end wall, repaving and associated utility work to accommodate both container cargo operations and administrative and passenger operations.

The funding was part of $14.3 million released by Gov. Neil Abercrombie for improvements to harbors on the Big Island and highways elsewhere in the state.

Today’s action included $80,500, which will be combined with $241,500 in federal funds, to enhance security at Kawaihae Harbor.

The project involves new fencing and other infrastructure to separate the harbor’s commercial operations and give recreational boaters greater access to the small boat harbor.
