UPDATE: High Surf Advisory for NE Facing Shores

This is a Civil Defense Flash Flood Watch update message for Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at 5:30 in the morning.

The National Weather Service Flash Flood Watch and Winter Storm Warning for Hawai‘i Island has been cancelled. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for northeast facing shores and a High Wind Warning for mountain summits.

Due to these conditions, the following are issued:

• All main roads are open at this time, do stay alert for debris and ponding on alternate routes.
• Ocean front residents should exercise caution for the shoreline exposed to the northeast swell.
• Travel to the mountain summits should be delay until the wind subsides.

The National Weather Service Flash Flood Watch for the Hawai‘i Island continues through 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, and may be extended.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding.

Due to the Watch, the following are issued:

• All Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
• National Weather Service forecast possible heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, do stay informed.
• Do not attempt to cross flowing water; turn around don’t drown.
• For your additional information all main roads are open at this time this includes Bayfront Highway.
• Ocean front residents should exercise caution near the shoreline.

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for the Big Island through late tonight Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019.

A band of deep moisture will remain near the Big Island overnight, and will produce widespread light to moderate rain, with a chance for heavy showers and thunderstorms. The bulk of the heavy rain is expected to move east of the Big Island on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding. Flash flooding is LIFE THREATENING. Do not cross fast  flowing water in your vehicle or on foot.

Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. If you experience heavy rain or rising  water, head to higher ground immediately.

The National Weather Service Flash Flood Watch for the Hawai‘i Island continues through 6 p.m. this evening and may be extended.

• A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
• Due to the Watch, the following are issued:
• All residents in flood-prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
• Residents should prepare for heavy rains by adding time for your daily commutes.
• National Weather Service forecast possible heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
• Stay informed.
• All schools and roads are open, including Bayfront Highway.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu reports that the Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for the Big Island through Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 19, 2019.

The watch is also in effect for Kaho‘olawe, Lāna‘i, Maui and Moloka‘i.

A band of deep moisture will move over the eastern half of the state and stall through Tuesday. Convective showers within this band will likely trigger heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the Big Island and Maui County. This band is expected to move eastward Tuesday night and Wednesday, though this Flash Flood Watch may need to be extended if heavy rains linger.
