UPDATE: Flood Advisory Extended

7 p.m. Update: The National Weather Service has extended the Flood Advisory for the Big Island until 9 p.m.

At 6:56 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over Puna district. Rain was falling at a rate of 1-inch per hour. Emergency manager reported heavy rain in the Glenwood and Mountain View areas.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hawaiian Acres, Na‘alehu, Glenwood, Mountain View, Kea‘au, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Pahala, Wood Valley and Hawaiian Paradise
Park.

Original Post: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawai‘i in Hawai‘i County until 7:30 p.m.

At 4:32 p.m., radar indicated heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms moving across windward Big Island from Puna to Honoka‘a. Rate rates up to nearly two-inches per hour have been observed in the heaviest showers. Expect additional periods of heavy rainfall into the evening.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Hawaiian Acres, Paauilo, Orchidlands Estates, Kukuihaele, Glenwood, Pepe‘ekeo, Kea‘au, Honoka‘a, Volcano, Laupahoehoe and Hawaiian Paradise Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

• Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
• Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
• Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
