California Hotel Pledges $450K to UH Mānoa Athletics

On Wednesday, July 25, the California Hotel in Las Vegas, announced a $450,000 pledge to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UH) Athletics Department for the volleyball court naming rights of the Stan Sheriff Center. The pledge will be phased over several years, helping to support university student athlete success initiatives, and helping further the longstanding relationship the California and Boyd Gaming have with the people of Hawai‘i.

“The University of Hawai‘i, the California Hotel and Boyd Gaming share a special relationship,” said David Matlin, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Athletics Director. “Mr. Boyd and his team have been long-time supporters of our Rainbow Wahine and Warrior student athletes. This is a difference-making gift that will directly benefit our student-athletes both in the classroom and on the field of competition. Mahalo nui loa to Mr. Boyd and the California Hotel team.”

The gift will provide assistance to student-athletes in areas of nutrition, cost of tuition, summer school and other preparatory athletic efforts. It will also further amplify the connection the California and Boyd Gaming have with UH athletes and fans. A subsequent ceremony will take place during a UH womans volleyball match to commemorate the naming of the court.

“The California and Boyd Gaming are proud of our decades-long relationship with the University of Hawai‘i and we are pleased to provide this gift to support University of Hawaii student athletes and Hawai‘i hometown sports teams for years to come,” said Boyd Gaming Executive Chairman Bill Boyd.

The California will continue its long-running Platinum Sponsorship of the UH athletic program, including its title sponsorship of the epic 50-year-old rivalry football game between University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and UH with Island Trophy. It will also continue to host a tailgate and celebratory events at the hotel for games played in Las Vegas.
