Three Hawai‘i Island Students Accepted to US Military Academies

High school students from around the state were honored on Tuesday, May 29 by the Military Affairs Council for their acceptance to prestigious U.S. military academies nationwide. Courtesy photo.

Thirty-five Hawai‘i high school students and prior enlisted military members have been accepted into four U.S. service academies this year, and 10 have been appointed to U.S. service academy preparatory schools.

Of the group, three students are from Hawai‘i Island and were accepted to the following academies:

  • Ragan Leslie of Konawaena High School, Class of 2017 – U.S. Naval Academy
  • Lawrence Barrett of Konawaena High School, Class of 2017 – U.S. Air Force Academy
  • Saydee Aganus of Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i Class of 2018 – U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School

Of the 35 who have accepted appointments, 25 students and their parents were recognized during a reception hosted by the Military Affairs Council (MAC) of the Chamber of Commerce Hawai‘i on Tuesday, May 29 at the Plaza Club.

“We are honored to be able to host this reception every year for these individuals and their families,” said Dennis Gibson, senior vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton, an MAC member. “Thousands of students apply to these prestigious military academies with strong academic achievements and outstanding character with the commitment to serve the nation. We want to wish this diverse group that come from both public and private schools across the state, the best of luck in their success and thank them for their commitment to serve our country.”

The students have been accepted to attend prestigious military academies including: U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School and U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School.

The institutions are designed to prepare young adult students to become officers in the U.S. armed forces.
