Hawai‘i ranks second in the nation among states with the highest tax burden, according to a new report released by the online finance website WalletHub.
In 2018’s Tax Burden by State analysis, Hawai‘i’s tax burden was measured at 11.57 percent, just behind New York in the top spot. The findings also reveal that Hawai‘i residents bear the highest sales and excise tax burden in the country at 6.52 percent.
Tax burden measures the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes to simplify tax ratios based on individual income.

WalletHub compared the 50 states across three tax types of state tax burdens including property tax, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes as a share of total personal income in the state.
