Sen. Kaiali‘i Kahele released a statement on planned, statewide community presentations on Maunakea and Senate Bill 3090 Senate Draft 2 (SB3090 SD2). The bill establishes a new Maunakea Management Authority and limits the number of telescopes that may be authorized on Maunakea.

“The purpose of these community presentations is to apprise, educate and provide information so the public and community can make informed decisions on the future of Maunakea regarding its proper stewardship and management,” said Sen. Kahele. “Without question, Maunakea is a culturally revered and special place to many of Hawai‘i’s people and finding that critical balance, without continuing to divide our communities, is of utmost importance to me. What does not exist today is a vision for Maunakea and leadership to bring that vision to fruition.”

Community presentations on the Big Island are scheduled as follows:

  • Waimea: Tuesday, March 20, 2018, Kanu O Ka ʻĀina Learning Center 64-1043 Hi‘iaka St., 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Hilo: Wednesday, March 21, 2018, Keaukaha Elementary School Cafeteria, 240 Desha Ave., 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Kailua-Kona: Monday, April 2, 2018, West Hawaiʻi Civic Center, 74-677 Kealakehe Parkway, 6 to 8 p.m.
