AARP will offer free tax assistance and preparation services on Hawai‘i Island through its nationwide Tax-Aide program beginning Feb. 1 and continuing through Apr. 17.

The program, which is the nation’s largest free tax service, is now in its 50th year of operation and has served more than 50 million taxpayers since it began in 1968.

“Tax-Aide is aimed at people who can’t afford to pay someone else to do their taxes,” said Barbara Kim Stanton, the AARP Hawai‘i state director. “For someone on a fixed income, saving money on taxes can make a big difference.”

In 2017, AARP helped people claim $820,888 in Earned Income Tax Credits in Hawai‘i, a deduction that about a quarter of eligible taxpayers miss, according to Stanton. In total, AARP volunteers helped Hawai‘i taxpayers receive $4,632,536 in refunds in 2017.

Tax-Aide program volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure they are knowledgable of the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code.
