Volcano Art Center will host a class teaching the basics of mushroom cultivation called “Food from Wood: Growing Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms on Logs, Stumps and Wood Chips.”

Led by instructor Zach Mermel, the workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Center’s Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Attendees will learn basic fungal biology and how fungal mycelium colonize various materials—particularly logs, stumps and wood chips. The class will also explore the health and ecological benefits of various edible and medicinal fungi found in Hawai‘i.
