Volcano Art Center to Host Ceramic Pottery Workshop

The Volcano Art Center (VAC) will host a seven-week clay pottery and firing workshop at its ceramic studio in Volcano beginning on Sunday, Sept. 17.

The workshop, called “Sunday Clay – High Fire!,” will be led by full-time artist and Volcano Village resident Erik Wold. Wold will instruct wheel throwing methods, lead informal discussions and provide one-on-one assistance for working with stoneware clay and high-fire reduction glazes. The class is open to beginning and experienced students.

Those new to ceramics will be guided step by step through the basics of using the potter’s wheel or hand building techniques. Continuing students and those with previous experience are encouraged to develop their skills and are welcome to pursue more advanced directions.

The workshopʻs first class will be on Sunday, Sept. 17, with a morning session from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. or an afternoon session from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m. Class dates will be Sept. 17 and 24, Oct. 1, 15, 22 and 29, and Nov. 5. Glazing will take place on Nov. 5th, with pick up of finished pieces on Dec. 3 or by other arrangement.

Cost for either session is $162 for VAC Members and $175 for general public, plus a $15 materials fee for clay, glazes and firing. Additional clay will be available for purchase. Open studio time will be available to registered students on Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. The cost is $10 per day, with tickets available at the VACʻs Administration Office front desk during business hours.
