Hula Voices, a free program featuring engaging talk story sessions with Hawai‘i Island kumu hula, is now being offered at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Hula Voices will occur regularly on the first Thursday of each month from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Hawai‘i Island’s kumu hula eat, sleep and live their lives centered on the practice of hula and associated arts. At Hula Voices they will share their genealogy, traditions, protocols, experiences, chants and choreography rooted in the ancient Hawiian practice of hula.
On Thurs., Sept. 7th 2017, Hula Voices will present Kumu Paul K. Neves. Kumu Paul is a student of the late kumu hula Wayne Kaho’onei Panoke, who in turn was a student of the late kumu hula Winona Beamer. He opened Hālau Ha’a Kea o Kinohi in 2004 with schools in Hilo, San Francisco and Kyoto, Japan. Desiree Moana Cruz will moderate the talk story.

Kumu Paul is a cultural practitioner of the traditional ways of the kanaka maoli (native Hawaiians) who emphasizes aloha as a lifestyle, ‘ohana (family), alakaʻi (leadership) and lokahi (unity) as the core of communal expression.
Kumu Paul’s purpose is to lay a foundation of aloha with the goal of making a difference in the world through the practice of Hawaiian culture and values.
