The public is invited to meet local authors during Kona Stories Bookstore’s monthly Words and Wine Event on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. This free event offers a meet-and-greet style social with complimentary pūpū and wine. The featured authors will be Susan Scott, Tricia Gunberg and Rochelle delaCruz.
Susan Scott is the author of seven Hawai‘i nature books and writes the “Ocean Watch” column for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Her column following the Kōlea bird generates more reader email than all other subjects combined. Together with Oscar “Wally” Johnson, a recognized world expert on the Pacific Golden-Plover, Scott wrote “Hawai‘iʻs Kōlea: The Amazing Transpacific Life of the Pacific Golden-Plover.” The scientific, yet easy-to-understand text is described as a reliable reference for both general readers and ornithologists.
Kōlea fly thousands of miles nonstop each year from Alaska to Hawai‘i, returning to the same spot in the Islands. Many Hawai‘i residents get to know individual birds, calling them “my Kōlea.” As a result, urban plovers often grow tame around people and are arguably Hawai‘i’s favorite bird.

Tricia Gunberg is the author of “Say YES to Who You Are to Create FITNESS.” She embraced a path of personal healing after she discovered Numerology in 2011. After receiving a Level II Reiki Certification in February 2013, she combined her intuition and healing abilities through Numerology and Reiki to help friends and family. Her new book is the result of these endeavors, and she draws connections between dream symbols and visions to help her clients receive messages and healing.
Rochelle delaCruz is a Hilo native and former teacher who lived in the Pacific Northwest for 28 years, telling her stories through radio and writing for Honolulu Theatre for Youth, and as the publisher and editor of Northwest Hawai‘i Times–a community newspaper for Hawai‘i transplants in Washington. Her new book, “Hawai‘i Ways,” is a collection of brief, funny observations that were first written for and aired on public radio stations in Hawai‘i and Washington. Rochelleʻs stories capture her dilemmas of coming from a small town on a remote island and living in a high-tech city on the U.S. mainland.
Words and Wine will begin with an informal social at 6 p.m. at Kona Stories Bookstore. A more formal book presentation by each author will conclude around 8 p.m., followed by a Q&A session. Dress is casual aloha wear.
